World Heart Day @ Venkataeswara Hospitals
World Heart Day (WHD) is the World Heart Federation's most important advocacy event. It is aimed at increasing the public awareness and promoting preventive measures to reduce the incidence of heart disease and stroke worldwide. Every year, the WHD is held on the last Sunday of September in more than 100 countries around the world to increase awareness of risk factors of causing cardiovascular diseases.
India has the largest number of heart patients in the world (estimated to be 5.7 crores). The chance of an Indian getting a heart attack is the highest in the world today, 4 times higher than Americans, 6 times higher than the Europeans, 7 times higher than Chinese and 20 times higher than Japanese and Blacks.
Conducted by the members and partners of World Heart Federation, WHD focuses on a specific theme each year. The theme for the year 2005 is "Healthy Weight, Healthy Shape". This reinforces the World Heart Day slogan "a Heart for Life".
